- You now need to insert a sample. For this lesson,
we'll measure the spectrum of a poly(styrene) film, also known as PS
film.
There should be a sample of PS in the cupboard
under the spectrometer - this is what they look like: |

Open the sample compartment.
Place the film in the transmission sample holder,
this should be inside the sample compartment, as shown
here.
If not, screw it into
place.

- Once the film is in place, press the "Sample" radio
button on the control panel, and press "Scan".
The results will look rather like the background, with a
few extra (downward pointing) peaks. We need to remove the background from
the single beam spectrum to get a spectrum of the sample. This is
explained in the next
page.
