PHYSICS AND CHEMISTRY FOR SCHOOL TEACHERS

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Continual and advanced education of teachers of Physics and Chemistry is of utmost importance in our educational system, which is why the Faculty of Sciences and, in particular, the Departments of Physics and Chemistry, have taken it on themselves to offer complementary scientific and pedagogical training of quality to teachers of these disciplines. This training enhances the skill set of educators in these key areas in order to create the best possible conditions for teachers to practice their profession, prepared to face the challenges presented by the new primary and secondary school curricula.

The Master in Physics and Chemistry for School Teachers intends to deepen a wide range of scientific and pedagogical competences through a complementary training in the two disciplinary areas, in order to create better conditions for teachers to carry out their professional activity, preparing them for the challenges posed by the new programs of basic and secondary education.

 

STRUCTURE

The cycle of studies leading to the Master’s degree in Physics and Chemistry for School Teachers comprises a:

  • a Specialization course, composed by an organized set of curricular units, corresponding to 66 ECTS credits. It confers a Specialization Course in Educational Physics and Chemistry;
  • a dissertation, original and specifically made for this purpose, corresponding to 54 of the total of 120 ECTS credits, whose public defense may award the Master’s degree in Physics and Chemistry for School Teachers.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

  •  Holders of a Bachelor degree in Physics or Chemistry with professional qualification for teaching in Physics and / or Chemistry.
  • Candidates holding a higher academic qualification referred to in points a) to c) of paragraph 1 of article 17 of Decree-Law no. 74/2006, in the wording given by DL 65/2018, or who meet the conditions referred to in paragraph d) of paragraph 1 of the same article, provided they have professional qualification for teaching in Physics and / or Chemistry.

 

SELECTION CRITERIA

  • Bachelor degree (0-20)
  • additional valuation of each of the parameters:
    • professional experience (activity with relevant components of Physics and / or Chemistry), 0-3
    • scientific curriculum (scientific activity developed), 0-1,5
  • Candidates may be subject to an individual interview, to be carried out by the Scientific Committee of the Cycle of Studies, to clarify aspects relevant to the selection and evaluation process and evaluation of the motivation for attending the Cycle of Studies.

Criteria for the tie-break of candidates:
As a tie-breaking criterion, candidates may be subject to an individual interview, to be carried out by the Scientific Committee of the Cycle of Studies, to clarify aspects relevant to the selection and evaluation process and evaluation of the motivation for attending the Cycle of Studies. For purposes of this criterion, the interview will be ranked from 0 to 5 points.
