PHYSICS

OBJECTIVES

The Master in Science in Physics aims to:

  • convey knowledge of classic and modern physics to underpin the development of explanatory models and the understanding of a vast range of phenomena.
  • provide mathematics and computational tools, fundamental for formulating and quantitatively analysing problems and models
  • train students in experimentation, data analysis, various forms of instrumentation, techniques of measurement, the conceptualisation and design of experimental projects
  • deliver practice in theoretical scientific investigation or professional experience as a physicist in a business environment
  • prepare students to continue their academic studies in a doctoral program in physics, physics engineering, other areas of engineering or in any of a number of pluridisciplinary degrees (biophysics, environmental science, resource management, etc)
  • prepare students for the exercise of higher level technical positions and those in research and development in governmental organisms, in the private sector or as self-employed specialists. Other sectors include governmental laboratories, universities, research institutes, schools, quality control, hospitals, financial service sector, banking and insurance, industry, IT businesses.

FIELDS OF SPECIALIZATION:

  • Experimental Physics
  • Theoretical Physics

STRUCTURE

The cycle of studies leading to the Master’s degree in Physics includes:

  • a Specialization course, in Experimental Physics or Theoretical Physics, comprising a set of organized curricular units, to which corresponds 75 ECTS;
  • a dissertation of a scientific nature or a project, originals and specifically made for this purpose, or an internship of a professional nature object of a final report, to which corresponds 45 of the total 120 ECTS of the cycle of studies.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

  • Holders of a Bachelor’s degree in Physics or graduates or masters in related fields, provided they have a degree in Physics and Mathematics near, in depth and extension, of a Bachelor in Physics;
  • Holders of a foreign higher degree in one of the areas described in the previous paragraph;
  • Holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum that the scientific committee of the course recognizes as sufficient to attest the capacity to carry out this cycle of studies. Candidates who are in a position to complete the Bachelor degree at the date of eventual enrollment in the Master in Physics are also accepted.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Candidates who have a Bachelor’s degree in the area of the study cycle, according to the criteria defined by the Scientific Committee of the Master, will be placed first.

Placing will be done according to the following criteria and subcriteria:

  • Only with academic CV (100%)
  • Academic CV (70%) + professional experience (30%)
    • In the evaluation of the academic CV:
      1. Bachelor’s grade(80%)
      2. Scientific works (10%)
      3. Merit or other awards (10%)

In the absence of any of items (ii) and / or (iii), the respective percentage is awarded for the Bachelor’s grade.

Criteria for the tie-break of candidates:

  • Final grade average, descending series;
  • Weighted average with ECTS of the Ucs classification (if you have not yet completed 1st cycle)

Candidates who do not yet hold a Bachelor’s degree and/or have an academic, scientific or professional curriculum that is recognized as attesting to the ability to carry out this Master by the statutory scientific body, will be serialized according to the criteria and sub-criteria indicated above, but replacing the final grade point average by the weighted average of the curricular units performed.
