MATHEMATICAL ENGINEERING

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

This degree furthers students’ basic training with useful applications of mathematics which leave them truly prepared to enter into the highly competitive job market.

The Master in Mathematics Engineering enables professionals to face and resolve problems in a wide scope of contexts, particularly within the sphere of academic research with the wide-ranging vision and flexibility which only solid mathematical training can confer. This degree is intended for various Bachelor degree holders provided they have a solid foundation in mathematics; it aids them to improve their scientific communication and successfully compete in the job market where they will be able to continue learning skilfully and autonomously.

 

STRUCTURE

The cycle of studies leading to the Master’s degree in Mathematical Engineering is composed by:

  • a Specialization course, composed by an organized set of curricular units, to which corresponds 75 ECTS credits;
  • a dissertation of scientific nature, or a project, originals and specifically made for this purpose, or an professional internship , with a final report, corresponding to 45 credits of the 120 ECTS required, whose public defense may award the Master’s degree in Mathematical Engineering.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

  • Holders of a Bachelor’s degree in mathematics or another scientific area with a strong background in mathematics;
  • Holders of a foreign higher academic degree that is recognized as meeting the objectives of the Mathematics degree;
  • Holders of an academic school, scientific or professional curriculum that is recognized as attesting to the capacity to carry out this Master by the statutorily competent scientific body (according to the regulation of the Master’s of UP).

 

SELECTION CRITERIA

Candidates who have a Bachelor’s degree in the area of ​​the Master, according to the criteria defined by the Scientific Committee of the Master, will be placed first.

Placing will be done according to the following criteria and subcriteria:

  • Academic curriculum (area of training and average obtained) (70%)
    • Sub-criterion 1: training area (30%)
    • Sub-criterion 2: average and adequacy of degree (40%)
  • Scientific curriculum and professional experience (30%)
    • Sub-criterion 1: technical and / or scientific publications and communications (10%)
    • Sub-criterion 2: participation in research projects, in placements in the area of study cycle or other relevant professional experience (20%)

Tiebreaker:
In the event of a tie, the result of an interview will be used as a tie-breaking criterion.

Candidates who do not yet hold a Bachelor’s degree and/or have an academic, scientific or professional curriculum that is recognized as attesting to the ability to carry out this Master by the statutory scientific body, will be serialized according to the criteria and sub-criteria indicated above, but replacing the final grade point average by the weighted average of the curricular units performed.
