LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE AND URBAN ECOLOGY

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Doctoral Programme in Landscape Architecture and Urban Ecology (PDAPEU/Programa Link) aims to contribute to the current debate on theory and methods in Landscape Architecture. It carefully exams strategic areas such as landscape design, planning and urban ecology, landscape aesthetics, environmental psychology and sociology and other matters central to the knowledgebase of Landscape Architecture and Urban Ecology. It advances the interrelationship and multidisciplinary debate between art (drawing, design and criticism) and science (biological processes, planning and management).

The long-term goal is to prepare its candidates to perform the professional duties necessary for research and decision-making and, as a result, train them for the efficacious defence of landscape quality. This doctoral programme has been designed in accordance with models current in the rest of Europe and the United States. It is offered jointly by the Universidade Técnica de Lisboa, the Universidade de Coimbra and the Universidade do Porto, who have come together to create this doctoral degree in accordance with the stipulations of the Bologna reforms. Since 2009, the Link Programmes have comprised 180 ECTS, 60 of which to be lectured by national and international experts in the field. Five students are currently enrolled in the programme which is currently beginning its third year at the Universidade do Porto which serves as the host institution.
