GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Master in Geology offers solid and transversal training covering fundamental and applied fields, in order to technical-scientific training in Geology, since scientific research in strategic areas to the training necessary for the future professionalization of geologists.

The structure and programmatic plan of the Master has as main objectives the specialization directed to relevant areas for contemporary societies such as geological mapping, exploration and characterization of geological resources, land planning, geological risk forecasting and prevention, management and conservation of the environment, valorization and management of the geological and paleontological heritage, among others. They are also objectives of the course the development of the capacity to initiate scientific research focused on the areas developed by the DGAOT teachers / researchers.

 

OBJECTIVES

The Master in Geology assigns competences that allow adequate performance in research / university teaching, administration and industry careers, in particular in the extractive industry (fossil fuels, metallic and nonmetallic ores, quarries, barriers, etc.) and geotechnics and technical / scientific consulting services in the areas of Geology intervention.

 

STRUCTURE

The cycle of studies leading to the Master’s degree in Geology is composed by:

  • a Specialization course, comprising a set of courses corresponding to 60 ECTS credits, 42 ECTS credits in compulsory courses and 18 ECTS credits in optional courses;
  • a specialty seminar with 6 ECTS credits and and original dissertation/internship with 54 ECTS credits of the total 120 ECTS credits of the course, whose public defense may award the degree of Master in Geology.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

  • Holders of a Bachelor’s degree in Geology or related fields;
  • Holders of a foreign higher academic degree in one of the areas described in the previous paragraph;
  • Holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum that the scientific committee of the Master recognizes as sufficient to attest the capacity to carry out this cycle of studies.

 

SELECTION CRITERIA

Candidates who have a Bachelor’s degree in an adequate area,  will be placed first.

Placing will be done according to the following criteria and sub-criteria

  • Academic curriculum (area of ​​training and average obtained) (70%)
    • Sub-criterion 1: training area (70%)
    • Sub-criterion 2: average and adequacy of degree (30%)
  • Scientific curriculum and professional experience (30%)
    • Sub-criterion 1: technical and / or scientific publications and communications (50%)
    • Sub-criterion 2: Participation in research projects, in placements in the area of ​​study cycle or other relevant professional experience (50%)

Tiebreaker:

  • In the event of a tie, the result of an interview will be used as a tie-breaking criterion.

Candidates who do not yet hold a Bachelor’s degree and/or have an academic, scientific or professional curriculum that is recognized as attesting to the ability to carry out this Master by the statutory scientific body, will be serialized according to the criteria and sub-criteria indicated above, but replacing the final grade point average by the weighted average of the curricular units performed.
