ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES AND TECHNOLOGY

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

This degree prepares competent, versatile and able professionals, whether to analyse common environmental problems or to take detailed decisions and find solutions that are both ecological and economically viable. The skills and knowledge acquired as a result of this programme will allow its graduates to take on middle or upper level technical positions whether in the public sector or in the private or in self-employment in the environmental sector consulting firms and those in the service sector, local governments and governmental agencies and laboratories, industry and teaching.

STRUCTURE

The cycle of studies leading to the Master’s degree in Environmental Sciences and Technology is composed by:

  • a Specialization course, composed by an organized set of curricular units corresponding to 60 ECTS credits. It confers a Specialization in “Environmental Remediation Technologies” or “Risk: Assessment and Environmental Management”;
  • a scientific Dissertation or a Professional Internship, with a final report, corresponding to 54 ECTS credits, together with the “Follow-up Seminar”, is 60 of the total of 120 ECTS credits, whose public defense in a may award the Master’s degree in “Science and Technology for the Environment – Specialization in Environmental Remediation Technologies” or “Science and Technology for the Environment – Specialization in Risk: Assessment and Environmental Management”.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

  • Holders of a Bachelor degree in Environmental Sciences and Technology, Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Geology and related fields;
  • Holders of a foreign academic higher degree in one of the areas mentioned above;
  • Holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum that is recognized as attesting the capacity to successfully complete this cycle of studies by the Scientific Committee of the Master may also be admitted.

 

SELECTION CRITERIA

Candidates who have a bachelor’s degree in one of the aforementioned scientific areas and related areas will be placed first.

Placing will be done according to the following criteria and subcriteria:

  • Academic curriculum (area of ​​training and average obtained) (70%)
    • Sub-criterion 1: training area (70%)
    • Sub-criterion 2: average and adequacy of degree (30%)
  • Scientific curriculum and professional experience (30%)
    • Sub-criterion 1: technical and / or scientific publications and communications (70%)
    • Sub-criterion 2: participation in research projects, in placements in the area of ​​study cycle or other relevant professional experience (30%)
Tiebreaker:

In the event of a tie, the result of an interview will be used as a tie-breaking criterion.

Candidates who do not yet hold a Bachelor’s degree and/or have an academic, scientific or professional curriculum that is recognized as attesting to the ability to carry out this Master by the statutory scientific body, will be serialized according to the criteria and sub-criteria indicated above, but replacing the final grade point average by the weighted average of the curricular units performed.

 

CAREER PROSPECTS

Positions appropriate for those with a Master’s degrees in Environmental Sciences and Technology include those in: effluent and residue management; environmental education; eco-efficiency; installation of systems of environmental quality, hygiene and environmental and occupational safety; environmental impact management; natural resources management and conservation; nature management and conservation; quality evaluation and control; the prediction, prevention and remediation of natural disasters; the description and treatment of areas of active desertification; and the recuperation of surface mining sites.
