BIODIVERSITY, GENETICS AND EVOLUTION

STRUCTURE

The cycle of studies leading to the Doctor’s degree in Biodiversity, Genetics and Evolution is composed by:

  • a “Curso de Doutoramento”, which doesn’t confer a degree, corresponding to 60 credits ECTS, during the first year;
  • the preparation of a thesis, appropriate to the specific branch of knowledge, to be conceived during the second, third and fourth years, corresponding to 180 ECTS credits.

 

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

  • A pre-Bologna, Bachelor’s degree (the former “licenciatura”) in biology or a related field; or a post-Bologna Master’s degree or any academic qualification legally equivalent.
  • Having an average final grade equal or greater than 14/20 in a pre-Bologna first cycle degree, or a post-Bologna weighted average final grade (considering all degrees) equal or greater than 14/20, or equivalent. Exceptions could be considered if the candidate is the author of an original work, already published (or with proof of acceptance for publication) in indexed journals -Web of Science- until the application deadline, or has an indicator of a similar achievement widely accepted by the national and international scientific communities in the area in which the candidate is applying.

 

SELECTION CRITERIA

  • Academic curriculum (50%)
    • the Sub-Criteria:
      • Weighted average of academic degrees
      • Quality of the academic formation and adaptation to the area of ​​the Doctoral Program
  • Professional experience and participation in scientific projects, publications and scientific communications (30%)
    • the Sub-Criteria:
      • Scientific Production
      • Participation in research projects and / or relevant professional experience
  • Grounds for motivation letter (20%)

Comments:
Candidates will be selected by the Coordinating Committee of the BIODIV Program, taking into account their CVs, their motivation letters and the outcome of an interview. Candidates whose academic and scientific curriculum is considered not suitable for attending the Program may be excluded.
According to the new Regulation of the Cycle of Studies Conducting the Degree of Doctor of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon (Dispatch no. 3098/2018, Diário da República, 2nd series – N.º 60 – March 26, 2018) there is only a selection of the candidates to fill the vacancies available, and are defined in each school year, and there is no ranking of the admitted candidates.
