ASTRONOMY AND ASTROPHYSICS

OBJECTIVES

The main objective of the Master in Astronomy and Astrophysics is to complement and extend the training of graduate students in astronomy, physics, mathematics and related fields. In particular, in order to improve their preparation for a research career in Astronomy, through their subsequent enrolment in the Doctoral Programme in Astronomy.

 

STRUCTURE

The Master consists of:

  • a Specialization course composed of an organized set of curricular units, corresponding to 66 ECTS credits, whose frequency with approval allows obtaining a Specialization in Astronomy and Astrophysics;
  • a scientific dissertation specially carried out for this purpose, or a professional internship subject to a final report, corresponding to 54 of the total of 120 ECTS credits, whose public defense allows for the award of the Master’s degree in Astronomy and Astrophysics.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

  • Applicants to the Master in Astronomy and Astrophysics must hold a Bachelor degree (minimum of 180 ECTS credits) or equivalent (including higher education foreign degrees), whose curriculum includes at least 30 ECTS credits, or equivalent, in Mathematics and Physics, including a minimum of 12 ECTS credits in each of these scientific areas.
  • Candidates that may verify these conditions before the end of the registration period in the Master in Astronomy and Astrophysics can also apply.
  • Holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum that is recognized as attesting the capacity to successfully complete this Master by the Scientific Committee of the Master in Astronomy and Astrophysics may also be admitted.

 

SELECTION CRITERIA

Candidates who have a Bachelor’s degree in the area of ​​the study cycle, according to the criteria defined by the Scientific Committee of the Master, will be placed first.

Placing will be done according to the following criteria and subcriteria:

  • Academic curriculum (area of ​​training and average obtained) (80%)
    • Sub-criterion 1: training area (40%)
    • Sub-criterion 2: grade average and adequacy (40%)
  • Scientific curriculum and professional experience (20%)
    • Sub-criterion 1: technical and / or scientific publications and communications (10%)
    • Sub-criterion 2: Participation in research projects, internships in the area of ​​the study cycle or other relevant professional experience (10%)

Criterion of tie-breaking candidates: the largest number of ECTS credits obtained in the area of ​​the Master.

Candidates who do not yet hold a Bachelor’s degree and/or have an academic, scientific or professional curriculum that is recognized as attesting to the ability to carry out this Master by the statutory scientific body, will be serialized according to the criteria and sub-criteria indicated above, but replacing the final grade point average by the weighted average of the curricular units performed.
